Though nascent
in its existence in the Old Alvarado Area of Union City, Paddy’s
Coffee House has already accomplished a lot since its inception
in 2003. While it serves as a home to every person who walks
through the doors, Paddy’s is much more. It is a meeting
place, a study hall, a comfortable couch to sit on and catch
up with friends, an art gallery, a soapbox, a stage, a showcase
for teen and youth talent in the aural and visual media, and
if all that does not meet your requirement, it is also a place
for a darned good cup of coffee. This vibrant coffee house
is culturally diverse, politically and socially active, environmentally
conscious and constantly growing
Paddy Iyer, on behalf of Paddy’s Coffee
House has received numerous awards within and outside the
community, for fostering and engendering the community ethos.
Paddy’s has been at the forefront
on a lot of issues. It was the first of its kind in the restaurant
business in the tri city area, to be certified as a Bay Area
Green Business. It is now in the process of becoming the first
coffee house to completely compost and recycle their waste,
in the process generating an absolute minimal garbage collection.
Paddy’s is also the location of numerous
fundraising and awareness campaigns. If the cause merits it,
Paddy’s donates its entire days collection to the cause.
Examples include the Darfur campaign benefiting Doctors without
Borders, the Tsunami Relief campaign benefiting the International
Red Cross.
Paddy’s hosts frequent open mic nights,
spoken word nights, voter registration drives. The coffee
house is nothing but an extension of Paddy’s social
and political awareness and philosophy. According to Paddy,
the greatest satisfaction is in seeing the youth speaking
up about the causes dear to their heart. To them, Paddy’s
Coffee House will always be an open venue.
Along with Union City Leisure Services,
Paddy’s Coffee House was instrumental in launching Paddy’s
Film Festival, PaddyPalooza, Kid’s Art Faire, Annual
Photo Contest and numerous other exhibitions.
